It's pretty clear that Wilkow plucks anything out of the news that contains any kind of liberal 'compassionate' component, especially if it involves tax payer money... I have no argument with that... however, it would be refreshing if he didn't always misrepresent what he is whining about. Setting aside the fact that it's the fourth leading killer of human beings worldwide, the Global fight against AIDS, for example, was his target for today, and, as usual, he created things to complain about to reinforce his weak point. The fact is that the Global Fund to Fight AIDS/TB/Malaria provides plenty of funding to counseling, prevention and testing (120 million people so far). The fund also gets funding from sources other than member countries -- like (PRODUCT) RED, which Andrew made fun of today, who has provided more than $151 MILLION to the fight. Finally, relative to the size of their economies, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and the United Kingdon all gave more to the Fund than the United States did... Again, I have no problem with Wilkow's effort to complain about paying for programs that save lives -- I just wish he didn't feel the need to lie about them to make his point. |

And hows that fight against AIDs working out so far? How's the success rate of that Global funding program going? |
|
marnesdad 1 year, 6 months ago |
Glad you asked... the fund is currently treating 2.8 million people worldwide with antiretrovirals... 120 million people have received testing and prevention counseling... just under a million pregnant women have received treatment to stop the spread of the disease to their children... Basically it's cost about $135 per person to keep them alive... Not bad. |

No.. not bad at all however....you haven't posted 1 success of a cure. Counseling & treatment to stop the spread of the disease is still not a cure, it's just a band-aid. A very expensive band-aid for the recipients at the expense of the producers. |

It's sad that you people see it this way... |

"You people"? What do you mean by that? LOL!!! MD, what's really sad is your sincerity is being exploited by an entity that only cares about its self. "The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front to rule" |

Can you provide some sources to back up your quantitative claims? I need 4th killer and $151 million. I want to walk through the logic. |

marnesdad 1 year, 6 months ago |
It's 'sad' that 'you people' happen to see anything short of a cure as 'failure'... Especially since this particular fund a) isn't looking for a cure, and b) has helped more than 120 million people for about $135 per person... |

Also, how many lives did it save? Is there a cite for that? |

Sure, AW... http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs310/en/index.html ....and..... http://www.theglobalfund.org/en/hivaids/?lang=en |

Ah...yeah I was kind of caught of guard by this earlier and forgot to post (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cause_of_death) ... I'm not arguing with any of marnesdad's points on this issue in particular, but saying that it's the 4th largest killer of human beings is misleading. You have to break it down into economic groups (wealth/poverty/development/productivity) to get that result (which is obviously a larger factor in developing countries as opposed to developed countries). The wiki link I gave above is a little older but probably more accurate in the context of the original claim. Carry on. |

MD, who said it was a failure? This global bureaucracy appears to be very successful at seizing wealth through the use of coercion. Like I said, this global bureaucracy is just another expensive band-aid designed to benefit the members within it at the cost of the wealth creators. No one is being cured of Aids, they are just being kept alive for the preservation of the global bureaucracy ability to take ones property & wealth. "The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule" |

Brooklyn... what's expensive about it? Our own federal government has spent roughly the same amount on cancer research right here in this country (NCI -$4.8 Billion over the past six years)... Have you seen a cure for cancer yet?... Does the fact that we've at least figured out how to prolong some cancer victims lives seem as meaningless to you? Or, is our desire to keep those around us 'alive' just some sort of scheme to 'rule'? LOL..... |

Look, Brooklyn... I'd have a lot more respect for you if you'd just come out and say that you shouldn't be forced to pay to save others' lives... |

Does anyone know offhand, roughly, how much is spent/raised by charitable events/giving for AIDS in relation to the same for breast and ovarian cancer and prostate cancer? I think that the individual cancers are all greater killers than AIDS. I was wondering if monney donated to AIDS, from whatever spource, is greater than that for the cancers. Also, cancer research hasn't found a silver bullet cure but many people today have beaten cancer into remission and have stayed cancer free. Isn't there something new just published in re AIDS research, supposedly a potential breakthrough drug? |

MD, at least you understand we are being forced by the guns of gov't to surrender our wealth to an entity that will just prolong the problem at the expense of innocent lives to feed a hunger for power & wealth that will never be satisfied. "The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule" |

Brooklyn... You've been brainwashed. It's sad that there is an element of our society so incapable of sitting on the sidelines that everything must be made to suffer... your fellow human beings, the environment, our economy... Very sad. |
|
marnesdad 1 year, 6 months ago |
Brooklyn... also, are you going to answer the cancer questions? Your federal tax dollars (the same amount being used to fight AIDS worldwide) are being used to find a cure for cancer here in the US... Do you have a problem with that? |

I have an issue where one single penny goes towards promoting a lifestyle that could kill you is spent. |

Really MD, brainwashed? Is it really I that has been "brainwashed" to believe that government is an honest, pure, efficient, accurate, entity that knows how to invest & spend our money to create more of it? Is it really I that has been "brainwashed" to beleive the history of all governments never tried to enslave the people? |
