The Wilkow Majority » Wilkow should Apologize

Today, in his haste to make fun of Sotomayor and try to get noticed by the media, Mr Wilkow called people from Puerto Rico 'technically American'... Mr Wilkow says lots of things and most are benign and harmless... but, I'm sure he upset a few people who consider themselves conservative AND happen to call Puerto Rico home... however, I think Mr Wilkow should apologize to the parents of Francisco Aguila, a Specialist with the XVIII Airborne Corps killed earlier this year in Afghanistan... I'm sure they consider their son to have been more than 'technically' American...considering his sacrifice.

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth and thus not American. They can not vote in Fed. elections, do not pay fed income taxes but they are allowed to enter and leave and even live here but they are NOT AMERICAN. When I served in the military we had several PRs in our unit and believe me if you called them American they did not care for that. Many serve because they want to, or to earn money for college but no apologies are needed from Andrew.

So you are the official spokesperson for the Aguila family now? Have they asked for a public apology from Wilkow? If they did I'm sure he would. Mr. Aguilas'choice and motivation to join the military is unknown to me or probably you for that matter. His sacrifice is not even in question. History is filled with wars that had soldiers fight under one flag while being from another country. Despite all of this, being from Puerto Rico he is still not an American citizen.

@ marnesdad: You seem like a relatively bright person, at least from your previous posts. And because of that, I'm less inclined to let you slide on this one. You're the one who doesn't know when to stop digging and you're the one who has to go to unheard of depths just to get your contrarion view across (and look...I didn't even judge your American bonifides!). Mr. Wilkow referred to them as "technically American" because Peurto Rico is obviously are a quasi-American state (not in the federal sense). It's true that they've enjoyed American citizenship for many years as a territory owned by the US government. But as a territory the federal government ultimately reserves complete sovereignty over the territory. The government, over time, slowly delegated powers to the territory to govern itself. Under the control of the United States government, it has its own republican form of government, and even its own constitution which was ratified by the US government. They operate under the powers and privelages of federal congress as do all U.S. territories, but they have enjoyed self-governing privelages for some time. It is a piece of land OWNED by the United States but they are not part of the United States. They are unincorporated. It is a clear distinction. As such, they are not even protected by the U.S. Constitution. To me, and most other people, this unique relationship with a territory that is not part of our country technically, and which is not covered by our Constitution, yet clearly is United States property, and in which the residents are granted American citizenship is what causes us to couch them as "technically American." What's even worse than you not being able to understand that distinction is that you took an actual affirmation of their American status as touted by Wilkow and tried to couch it as if he was just saying they weren't American at all. Even if you have some superfluous objection to the term "American" being qualified with "technically" you should still be aware of the fact that he ultimately calls them American. If he called them "technically un-American" then maybe you could have raised a point. But, and I'm sorry, you really have to be pulling straws to object so much to something so trivial.

What's interesting is there are 2 political parties in Puerto Rico: ones who want statehood and those who don't. The majority don't want to be state because they'd lose their sovereignty. Sounds antithetical to what we're all about, eh?

Cross of crimson; excellent statement. A correction on my statement should be Peurto Ricans are US citizens but can have Peurto Rican citizenship as well.

I wouldn't hold any radio talk show host accountable for one little thing said that offended someone. If that one little thing offends you so much, stop listening to his show. Freedom of speech. Wilkow doesn't say things to callers like "get AIDS and die, you pig." (Savage) or Michael Reagan's “We ought to find the people who are doing this, take them out and shoot them. Really. You take them out, they are traitors to this country, and shoot them. You have a problem with that? Deal with it. You shoot them. You call them traitors, that’s what they are, and you shoot them dead. I’ll pay for the bullets.” BIG DIFFERENCE!

@Cross... Don't take this the wrong way, and I surely mean no offense, but it's clear that you've never served in the military. SP4 Aguila was wearing the uniform of the United States armed forces when he breathed his last breath... I'm sure everyone who served with him currently place him somewhere between George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on the 'greatest Americans ever' list. There's is no greater sacrifice you can make for this country... To be referred to as 'technically American' after making this sacrifice is simply wrong...

@Nogoats.... So, the fact that other people have said worse gives Wilkow a free pass?.... It's amusing how you people rationalize things...

I didn't hear him talk about this, so if I am wrong forgive me. You said that Mr. Wilkow said that people from Puerto Rico were technically American. If he did not say that the serviceman in question was "technically" American, what's the problem? A soldier that fights for America is American regardless of where they were born. You would say the same of any nationality. People from Puerto Rico are technically American... what's so inflammatory about that?

@Mikeg... Like I said in my original post, Wilkow was doing his best to be offensive, which is why he made the comment in the first place. I was just pointing out that one of these people he believes only 'technically American' died fighting for this nation earlier this year... If that's cool with you, sobeit... I just think he should apologize to the Americans who protect him, regardless of what he says.

only offensive to people who spend their time desperately seeking offense. Do you realize how much oxygen you waste beating a dead horse? Especially in this delicate global climate we live in.
