Try THE REAPER'S LINE, by Lee Morgan. He's a former Customs Special Agent who worked the border as both a Border Patrol Aget, Ant-Smuggling UNit Agent, and Customs agent for many years, mostly around Douglas, AZ. You may not agree with everything he says, but it's about the most honest thing you'll ever read about border enforcement. |

I might add that he goes into some detail throughout the book on the systematic failure of every administration to actively pursue the war on drugs, as well as the complete futility of building a fence and expecting it to work. |

I am starting to believe the War On Drugs is a total failure, and the legalization of drugs is worth looking into. |

The war on drugs is a total failure. The reasons why are monumentally important. I keep urging people to read Charles Bowden's books (DOWN BY THE RIVER, MURDER CITY), Elaine Shannon's DESPERADOS, Lee Morgan's THE REAPER'S LINE. Reading those, you'll understand that legalizing marijuana may help with part of the problem. But thinking that the violence of the cartels and their soldiers is going to go away; that the truly unbelievable depths of the corruption between the cartels and the governmental structures in Mexico, from the president down through the army and police; to believe that that will fade away is an extraordinary pipe dream. The government lies its ass off about what's happening on the border. We're paying for it through the nose. But people still latch onto legalizing drugs and open immigration and building a wall as things that are going to solve the problems. The problem reside in Washington, D.C. and Mexico City. |
