But it's not one I've heard anyone sufficiently address. One of the drawbacks (in the liberal's eyes) of today's healthcare is the fact that many doctors are opting out of Medicare and Medicaid. They will not accept new patients with those forms of coverage. Obviously in the case of Medicare it's a self-correcting problem; as their existing patients with Medicare pass away, their patient base with Medicare slowly dwindles away. Now, should Obamacare be enacted, what is to stop doctors from doing much the same thing? If they choose not to take it, as is their right, nothing has really been improved in the system. Yes, eventually private insurance goes away under the plan, but these doctors can work for cash, credit, or even good ol' barter. Now obviously I'm sure there's some sort of stipulation in the bill requiring doctors and hospitals to accept Obamacare - otherwise, I don't see how it could truly be "universal" coverage. But, if there is such a requirement, doesn't that create a violation of the 13th Amendment? Not to say that doctors would be enslaved, but wouldn't that create a de facto involuntary servitude where doctors would be required to work for the amount that the government deems they are to be paid, and to provide the care the government requires, regardless of their personal preferences? |

That's still one of the unknowns which is one more reason why we should not be rushing to push this *ahem* power grab...err bill. |
