How I remember 9-11 When Andrew came back from the break, on 9-11, he replayed President George W. Bush addressing the workers at the ground zero. For me that brought back so many memories. Being a police officer, I was close to the end of my night shift, I was in the station doing paper work and my dispatcher came into the squad room to tell me that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. I turned the TV on and just wondered how it could happen. Then when the second plane hit, I knew. I was shocked, and being on the west coast (SF Bay Area) I started thinking about targets in our area, I started thinking about my family’s safety and about the safety of the residents in the town I serve. As I watched the police, fire personnel and other rescue workers deal with the aftermath and the resulting collapse, my heart just sank. I thought about how I would deal with such a attack and how many times I had to put my life at risk, most of the time not stopping to think about my safety while I focused on performing my duties. When I saw my Chief later, I told him if a national call went out for assistance, put me on the list first. In the coming days, when I watched the news and saw the people of New York rally in support and when I saw President Bush stand tall and speak to the workers at Ground Zero it put my fears at rest and gave me comfort. I knew as a country we would stay strong and endure, no matter what came our way. It also reassured me that I was in the right profession.
